They are searching for meaning. For authenticity. For a deeper emotional connection with the places they visit.

This shift marks the return of nature at the heart of the hospitality experience — not as decoration, but as foundation. And at the center of this transformation lies something invisible, yet profoundly powerful: natural fragrance.

Beyond Design: The Invisible Architecture of Memory
We remember places not only through what we see, but through what we feel.
Among all our senses, smell is neurologically unique. The olfactory system connects directly to the limbic brain — the region responsible for memory and emotion. Unlike sight or sound, scent bypasses rational processing and speaks directly to our subconscious.
This is why a single natural fragrance note can suddenly transport us back to a moment, a landscape, a feeling.

A guest may forget the exact furniture of a suite, but years later, the subtle aroma of local jasmine, vetiver, orange blossom, cedarwood, or frangipani can instantly bring back the atmosphere of that stay. Natural fragrance anchors experience into long-term memory.

Local Natural Fragrances: The Soul of a Place
In a world of standardized hotel concepts and synthetic signature scents, something essential has been lost: terroir (geographical identity).
True luxury today is not uniformity. It is authenticity.
When a hospitality space incorporates local natural fragrances, it does more than scent a lobby. It tells a story. It honors geography. It connects guests to the living environment of the region.

In Bali, frangipani and ylang ylang.
In Morocco, orange blossom and cedar.
In Tuscany, rosemary and cypress.
In Provence, lavender and jasmine.

These are not just powerful marketing tools. They are cultural signatures.
Natural fragrance becomes an olfactory passport — allowing guests to experience the spirit of the land itself.

From Experience to Emotional Bond
The future of hospitality is emotional architecture.
When guests encounter natural fragrance throughout their stay — in welcome rituals, spa treatments, rooms, linens, or curated scent moments — something deeper happens:
The nervous system relaxes.
Stress levels decrease.
A sense of belonging emerges.
The place becomes emotionally imprinted.
When they return home, memory remains alive. And with memory comes attachment. Attachment builds loyalty. Loyalty builds legacy.

This is not decoration. This is neuroscience serving hospitality.

The Return of Nature in the New Luxury Era
For decades, synthetic uniformity dominated commercial scenting. Success emerges when a fragrance carries a life, a culture, and a voice that reaches far beyond the traditional perfume world.
This is precisely what we observe in the journeys of two Certified Natural Perfumers whose paths illustrate a profound shift in contemporary perfumery: Jennifer Jones and Ana Elena Sastrias.
Both are perfumers, yet neither confines perfume to the perfume industry alone.

Jennifer Jones, Founder of the brand Scents of the Texas Hills Country: The Intelligence of the Horse Translated into Scents.
Jennifer Jones comes from the world of horse dressage, a discipline built on time, humility, and an acute sensitivity to living beings. Dressage is an art of listening before acting, of developing trust through patience rather than control. This philosophy naturally infuses her perfumes. They are born from a deep understanding of how scent interacts with emotion, memory, and presence—not only for humans, but also within the refined sensory world of horses.

By doing so, Jennifer reaches an audience that extends far beyond perfume lovers. Her work resonates with equestrians, animal specialists, and individuals drawn to embodied practices and non-verbal intelligence. Her fragrances are not positioned as lifestyle accessories but as tools of connection, awareness, and relationship. In this sense, perfume becomes a bridge between disciplines, cultures, and sensitivities.

Ana Elena Sastrias, Founder of the brand AES Creation Natural: Painting Bowie in Olfactory Form.
Ana Elena Sastrias follows a different yet equally powerful path. As both a painter and a natural perfumer, she approaches fragrance as an artistic language rather than a commodity. Her tribute perfume inspired by David Bowie’s Hunky Dory is driven by a clear intention: to speak directly to Bowie’s universe and to those who inhabit it. Reaching Bowie fans is not incidental—it is central to her vision.

Ana is deeply passionate about Bowie, not as an icon to reproduce, but as an artist whose work continues to inspire transformation, freedom, and creative courage. Her perfume is conceived as a tribute, a sensory homage that weaves together three artistic dimensions: music, painting, and scent. Notes become colors, accords echo melodies, and the fragrance itself functions as an extension of her visual art. The result is an olfactory experience that speaks as much to music lovers and art collectors as it does to perfume connoisseurs.

In both cases, perfume becomes a meeting point. Key concerns involve inhalation leading to lung issues and systemic effects from particles entering the bloodstream.”

Other potential health risks include the following:
Increased Reactivity: Their huge surface area makes them more chemically reactive, generating harmful reactive oxygen species (ROS).
Organ & Tissue Accumulation: Once in the bloodstream, they can lodge in the brain, liver, heart, spleen, and nervous system.
Cellular Interference: Can disrupt normal cell functions, leading to cell death (apoptosis) or interfering with cell cycles.
Respiratory Issues: Inhalation can cause inflammation and damage, with some carbon nanotubes showing asbestos-like risks for lung cancer.
Skin Penetration: Can cross intact skin, especially if damaged (e.g., eczema, sunburn).

Research shows significant potential for harm, but the overall health impact isn't fully understood, and traditional toxicity tests may not capture all risks; the body has no natural immunity to these new substances.
Of course, companies that are promoting the use of nanotechnology will ask you to ignore the risks stated in dozens of websites that we can easily access, and that they have overcome these risks; but this is very new science, and no one knows the effects this technology will have in combination with natural materials, such as with Natural Perfumes and Natural Skin Care.

Therefore to protect consumer's health, we are not allowing the use of Nanotechnology in our community. These moments reminded us why we began this journey: to honor authenticity, talent, and the true essence of luxury.

The New Luxury Summit: Voices that Inspire
During the Congress, the New Luxury Summit gathered a constellation of exceptional perfumers and visionaries who shared not only their expertise, but also their hearts. Each speaker reminded us that perfumery is above all a human story—crafted with patience, integrity, and a profound connection to nature.
Their words continue to echo in us, guiding the future of our community with wisdom and passion.

A Major Partnership in India: Cosmetics & Ingredients Expo, Madras
2025 also marked our important participation as co-partner in the Cosmetics and Ingredients Expo in Madras, India.
India—with its ancient aromatic traditions—offered the perfect setting to build bridges between heritage and innovation.
Our collaboration there strengthened our global presence and affirmed our commitment to honoring local cultures while supporting new creative horizons.

Scent of Healing: A Journey of Wellbeing
This year, our Scent of Healing program blossomed beautifully across continents, with meaningful events held in Palm Springs, California, and Taipei, Taiwan.
These gatherings reminded us that scent is not only an art, but also a medicine for the heart—a source of balance, connection, and inner harmony.
Participants described these encounters discovering natural perfumery as transformative, grounding, and filled with serenity.

Workshops, Webinars & Our Precious Book Club
This year also strengthened our commitment to education and transmission. Through a rich program of workshops and webinars in partnership with the Natural Perfumery Teacher's Academy, we supported students, perfumers and teachers around the world in deepening their knowledge and refining their craft. And in November, our Book Club opened the doors to our treasured library, sharing some of the most important works in perfume history—more than 200 rare and precious books that illuminate centuries of aromatic wisdom.

Two Major Publications: A Milestone for Perfumery Literature
2025 will forever be remembered as the year we released two significant books that enrich the world of perfumery:

1. Andrej Babicky, IPF Chair Italy and Certified Master Natural Perfumer

Winter arrives not as an intruder but as a slow-moving threshold, an ancient hinge in the year where the world falls briefly silent, only to reveal a deeper music beneath the frost. For natural perfumers, this is not merely a season of cold air and shortened days; it is a chamber of reflection, a time in which the craft folds inward, asking us to step back, breathe differently, and listen to what we have forgotten during the restless months of creation.
The winter solstice, “solstitium”, the sun standing still, has always marked a moment where human cultures turn toward fire, ritual, and meaning. Across millennia and continents, this darkest point of the year has been interpreted as both an ending and a beginning, a place where the past distills itself into a single drop, and the future begins to take its first, tentative shape.
For the natural perfumer, this pause is not a luxury. It is a discipline.

The Discipline of Stillness
Our art often appears outwardly kinetic: tinctures swirling, resins softening in gentle heat, botanicals steeping in slow macerations, droplets of absolutes and essential oils dancing on the scale. Yet winter insists on the opposite gesture. It demands that we become attentive to the subtle, the unmoving, the nearly silent.
There is a particular intimacy in returning to raw materials during the cold months. Resins thicken, waxes tighten, citrus oils lose their exuberant summer sparkle and reveal their inner architecture: bitter, mineral, almost metallic. Even the woods behave differently. Oakmoss becomes heavier, its velvet texture deepening. Patchouli grows contemplative, earthy, strangely philosophical. Myrrh releases its incense-like breath as if remembering the rituals for which it was once burned in desert temples.
Winter invites us to smell with patience. To bend closer. To rediscover.
In my masterclasses on natural extraction, I often speak of winter as “the quiet furnace” a metaphorical heat that does not display itself but instead works internally, tempering the nose, sharpening the intellect, tightening the connection between memory, intuition, and raw material. Students often find that their ability to evaluate becomes more precise in winter’s psychological clarity. Perhaps because there is less noise. Less competition from the world. More truth.

A Cultural Season: Between Dawn and Ember
Anthropologists remind us that winter solstice traditions across Europe and beyond share three common threads: introspection, purification, and preparation for renewal. Whether one looks at Roman Saturnalia, Norse Yule, the Celtic Midwinter rites, or later Christian traditions, the pattern remains: a cycle of acknowledging darkness, invoking light, and reshaping one’s inner structure before the new year.
This arc mirrors the perfumer’s seasonal cycle. Winter is the moment when we look back at our creations, not with the defensive pride we sometimes adopt mid-year, but with a more honest, almost monastic gaze. Which formulas survived the year with integrity? Which lost their voice? Which require restructuring, rebuilding, or perhaps a return to their primal idea?
This anthropological echoing between the world’s rites and our personal craft is not accidental. Perfume, especially natural perfume, has always been a cultural expression as much as an olfactory one. The materials of winter are the same materials ancient civilizations burned or treasured during the solstice: frankincense and myrrh, labdanum, pine resins, sweet spices like cinnamon and clove, evergreen branches crushed for their aromatic hopefulness. Even citrus peels, bright offerings in a dark season, carry ritual weight.
By working with these materials now, we are participating in a lineage older than our craft. We inhale what countless generations inhaled before us: reassurance, warmth, continuity.

A Phenomenology of Cold
There is also something phenomenological about winter: the way cold changes the body, the breath, and therefore the perception of scent. Fragrance behaves differently on winter skin. Diffusion shifts. The threshold of detection rises. The boundaries between the wearer and the world become sharper.
I often encourage perfumers to smell outdoors in winter, just for a moment. The air itself becomes a collaborator, almost a reagent. A drop of vetiver in a cold breeze unravels into silver threads. A tincture of dried citrus peel becomes crystalline, nearly architectural. Incense resins become richer, darker, carrying with them a memory of fire even before they are heated.
This phenomenological dance between air and material is central to understanding the winter palette. It also forces us to confront an uncomfortable truth: many of the scents we adore behave differently in cold months, revealing aspects that either enrich or challenge the composition. This is not a flaw. It is knowledge.
And winter is a season of knowledge.

Returning to the Roots of Craft
Every perfumer, no matter how experienced, must periodically return to the roots: raw materials, technique, discipline of the nose, clarity of vision. The world appears dormant, yet transformation is taking place underground, in the unseen architecture of roots and soil. This metaphor is particularly resonant in perfumery, where the seeds we plant now, new formulations, new extractions, new conceptual frameworks, will only bloom months later.
Planning the year ahead should feel like planting in the dark: quietly, deliberately, without seeking immediate results. What themes call to you? What materials ask to be explored more deeply? Which traditions or stories want to be reinterpreted through scent?
The next cycle always begins here, in the cold. With the whisper of labdanum. The distant warmth of benzoin. The resinous clarity of fir needle. The echo of ancient rites in a drop of frankincense.
Winter is not the end of the year for a perfumer. It is the beginning.

The Solstice Within
As the solstice arrives and the sun appears to hesitate on the horizon, take that hesitation as an invitation. Slow down. Smell more deeply. Let the season shape your practice as much as your practice shapes the season.
Natural perfumery is an art of attention, an art which thrives when the world quiets. Can I make a living from it?
I’ve heard these questions so many times from prospective students and aspiring artisans. Here’s a succinct, practical view to inspire you and help you map a viable path.

Natural perfumery is a craft you can grow into a living with patience, focus, and a clear vision. It’s not just about making scents—it’s about shaping experiences, caring for people and the planet, and telling your unique story through fragrance. If you’re passionate, committed, and curious, you’ll find opportunities to turn this art into several meaningful careers.

Why natural perfumery matters

Natural perfumery blends art and science to create fragrances from botanical ingredients—essential oils, absolutes, resins, and other naturals. It’s about scent with intention: honoring nature, understanding profiles, and crafting experiences that connect memory, mood, and environment. It’s storytelling through scent, with a mindful approach to sourcing and craft.

A realistic path to sustainability and success

- It can be a meaningful, sustainable path when you treat it as a craft and a small business. Start small, grow organically, and build a brand that reflects your values.
- Demand for natural scents is growing in niche markets—boutique brands, spas, wellness products, candles, soaps, and personal care. A focused, quality-centered approach often leads to loyal customers and repeat business.

Your pathway: certifications and beyond

If you study Natural Perfumery with us, you’ll also learn Olfaction Training, the importance of olfaction, its psychology but also its physiology. Add the Aromatherapy course, and you become a Perfumotherapist. This four-certification combination provides a solid foundation for a professional, versatile practice.

- Olfaction Training: master the basics of scent perception, memory, and fragrance building.
- Aromatherapy: understand how plants influence mood, well-being, and daily life.
- Perfumotherapist: combine perfumery skills with therapeutic principles for well-being-oriented applications.
- Certification balance: the four certifications together open doors in product development, wellness, and education.

What you can build with it

- Create and brand your own natural perfumes.
- Collaborate with your other talents (art, painting, photography, poetry, horse dressage, yoga…) to build a cohesive brand image that tells a story.
- Launch a line of related products (candles, skincare, bath salts) that share your scent signature.
- Offer workshops, consultations, or scent-design services for individuals and businesses.
- Promote through IPF events, books, and partnerships to reach wider audiences.

Natural Perfumery can be applied to many activities, so let us know what other passions you have and help us create new Natural Perfumery jobs.

IPF Educational Program

https://www.perfumefoundation.org/blog/ipf-educational-program

https://www.perfumefoundation.org/blog/ipf-educational-program#comments

certification

Conferences

IPF Educational Programs

IPF Newsletter

New Luxury Code

supply chain

Terry Johnson

Webinars

By Terry Johnson, IPF Vice Chairman One of IPF’s strongest tenets is that the key to building a stronger, more profitable, high-value natural essence community is education. When many people think about IPF’s educational program, the Natural Perfumery Teacher’s Academy first comes to mind, and rightly so. The Teacher’s Academy has excellent courses teaching Natural Perfumery, Natural Aromatherapy and many other topics from Business and Marketing, to Olfaction Training, to the History of Perfumery-- all designed to improve natural essence professionalism and better prepare people for successful futures.

There are, however, several other IPF programs that also provide education to the natural essence community that some might not think of as educational:

The New Luxury Code
The New Luxury Code teaches us to first respect ourselves and then respect the world around us. Its positive lesson is a reminder of how we should conduct ourselves in business and in all other aspects of our lives.

IPF/SEOS Certification of the Supply Chain
An important part of IPF’s mission is to educate and inform all stakeholders in the high-value natural essence community (including consumers) of the importance and value of natural essences, such as natural perfumes and natural essential oils.
IPF/SEOS certifications are solutions to one of the biggest threats to the natural essence supply chain: The disconnect between the two ends of the supply chain. Growers and processors generally know very little about retailers and consumers, and retailers and consumers know very little about growers and processors. This disconnect is the reason why IPF is so determined to educate the entire chain of distribution of the value of certification standards that do not allow harmful ingredients, procedures or practices to be used within the natural essence supply chain. IPF/SEOS certifications are logical extensions of the New Luxury Code that send positive messages to consumers looking for natural products they can trust and have confidence in using.

The IPF Newsletter
An important part of our overall educational strategy is the IPF Newsletter. Each month we draw from experts in many areas of natural essences to teach their valuable insights to improve the professionalism of stakeholders. IPF also encourages readers to also be teachers by sharing newsletters with others within your social media network.

Conferences, Keynotes, and Webinars
IPF’s educational strategy also involves participation in events around the world, such as IPF Chair and Founder Creezy Courtoy’s recent keynote address in Chennai, India, IPF’s Pavilion at the Barcelona (Spain) Perfumery Congress, including a two-day enfleurage workshop, and the Scent of Healing Events in Malibu and Palm Springs, California.
IPF will continue to provide this leadership in education through these programs and many others to come - all to help Natural Perfumers and Natural Aromatherapists worldwide create millions of educated and informed consumers that will benefit from making these natural products part of their daily lives.

Will India Lead the Global Fragrance Revolution?

https://www.perfumefoundation.org/blog/will-india-lead-the-global-fragrance-revolution

https://www.perfumefoundation.org/blog/will-india-lead-the-global-fragrance-revolution#comments

Ayurveda

beautyIndustry

clean beauty

Cosmetic Ingredients Expo

Creezy Courtoy

fragrance market

India

sustainability

vegan

wellness

From left to right: Chaitali Davangeri, Dr.Renuka Thergaonkar, Dr Rama Srivastava, Creezy Courtoy and Pradeep Mapalagama By Creezy Courtoy, IPF Founder and Chair India, a land of ancient history and boundless cultural heritage, has become a vital player in shaping the global beauty and wellness industry’s future. At the recent Cosmetic Ingredients Expo in Chennai, I had the opportunity to shed light on how the world is looking to India for inspiration while confirmin [...]

From left to right: Chaitali Davangeri, Dr.Renuka Thergaonkar, Dr Rama Srivastava, Creezy Courtoy and Pradeep Mapalagama

By Creezy Courtoy, IPF Founder and Chair

India, a land of ancient history and boundless cultural heritage, has become a vital player in shaping the global beauty and wellness industry’s future.

At the recent Cosmetic Ingredients Expo in Chennai, I had the opportunity to shed light on how the world is looking to India for inspiration while confirming the rising consumer demand for vegan and natural products.
India’s beauty industry is currently experiencing a transformative moment, one that mirrors global trends. Today, consumers are demanding ingredient transparency, clean beauty, and ethically-sourced products—and regulators are stepping up to ensure those expectations are met.

Fragrance in the Ancient World: A Timeless Story
Fragrance and wellness have always been intricately intertwined, dating back to the dawn of civilization. Across centuries and continents, scents were revered for their spiritual and therapeutic uses:
- Ancient Egypt: “Those who breathe the scent of flowers, breathe the soul of flowers.”
- South America: Indigenous healers, or “perfumero,” used scents as medicine.
- China: The character for “fragrance” is the same as for “medicine.”
- India: The Vedas contain vast knowledge of healing recipes through the use of perfumes. With its rich perfumery tradition steeped in Ayurveda, India stands poised to lead the global future of natural fragrances.
Nature and Flowers in India are part of the daily live, from flowers you can buy in the streets for the pleasure of the eyes or for religious purpose to the vast flower fields in the country side, flowers are everywhere. India is definitely a land of perfume.

The Future of Beauty: Reconnection with Nature
Today’s consumers are undergoing a profound shift in their lifestyles. They are prioritizing health and wellbeing over luxury and seeking products that reflect their values. The global beauty market is evolving rapidly, and the demand for natural, vegan, and sustainable products has never been higher. Here’s what today’s consumers care about most:
- Natural and Vegan Products: Free from animal-derived ingredients.
- Sustainability: Ethical sourcing and environmentally conscious packaging.
- No GMOs or Synthetics: A closer relationship with nature through unaltered, organic products.
- Holistic Wellness: Aromatherapy, aromachology, and perfumotherapy are no longer niche—they're necessities.
India is perfectly positioned to tap into this tremendous consumer demand. Being one of the largest producers of raw materials for perfumery, India plays an essential role in the heart of this global supply chain.

Why India Holds the Key
As the world embraces natural and vegan fragrances, India’s wealth of resources gives it a head start. For example:
- Major natural raw materials such as vetiver, sandalwood, patchouli, jasmine, rose, tuberose and other essential oils originate here.
- Ayurveda—India’s ancient system of health and wellness—aligns seamlessly with modern demands for ethical, herb-based beauty products.
- The millennia-old traditions of yoga, aromatherapy, and holistic wellness firmly anchor India’s place as the epicenter of sustainable innovation.

Moreover, this shift represents a massive opportunity. International markets like the *United States, Australia, and China are showing incredible interest in natural perfume ingredients. Eliminating unnecessary intermediaries could enable manufacturers to directly access these high-demand markets.

Challenges, however, remain. Supply chain knowledge gaps and market linkages must be strengthened to fully capitalize on the global appetite for Indian excellence.

LA Laura Paris in the Jasmine field - Photo: Blustream

A Youth-Driven Revolution
India’s young population—nearly 70% under the age of 35—is fuelling this transformation. This generation is increasingly conscious of their health, wellness, and appearance. They’re vocal about their desire for innovative products that blend tradition with modernity.

Looking ahead, the numbers reflect immense potential:
- India’s fragrance market, valued at $3 billion (USD) in 2024, is projected to grow to $3.9 billion by 2033.
- By rekindling its heritage and blending it with modern-day innovations, the rise of Indian natural perfumers is a certainty!

Trust in the Future: Combining Heritage and Innovation
India’s perfumery story is one of pride, legacy, and opportunity. With 5,000 years of history behind it, India’s evolution lies in reclaiming its heritage and reshaping it for today’s conscientious consumers. Through the revival of Ayurveda, aromatherapy, and yoga-inspired wellness, India can carve out a leadership position in the global perfume industry.

The journey may not always be easy, but the opportunity is enormous. For the Indian beauty and fragrance industry, the future is natural, sustainable, and vegan. The time to act is now! 🌿

Let’s reimagine the beauty industry together—with India leading the way, bringing back ancestral knowledge, wellness and spirituality.
