Sue Lei - Shanghai

11.00am: The Making of Traditional Aromatherapy and the Rise of Independent Chinese Perfumers. The development of incense designers in China. 
Sue Lei will delve into the practices of Chinese incense designers, exploring the methods and purposes behind Chinese aromatherapy production, as well as their interpretations of ecological concepts. He will also highlight the innovative efforts of China's new generation of fragrance designers, who incorporate Western techniques to craft aromatherapy products and often complement their creations with fresh prose or poetry. Their goal is to convey the essence of their aromatherapy creations to consumers through literary language, potentially heralding a new artistic movement. Additionally, a number of small boutiques across China specialize in selling niche perfumes imported from abroad, providing a wide range of unique olfactory experiences to the Chinese market. Moreover, the sense of smell is increasingly gaining attention, leading to a revival of ancient olfactory experiences and memories. In partnership with museums, we aim to undertake olfactory experiments to enrich visitors' experiences, using scents to enhance the exploration of exhibitions.

Su Lei is Curator of Contemporary Art Museum Designer, Cognitive Psychology and Spatial Experience Designer, Associate Professor, School of Future Design, Beijing Normal University (BNU) and the IPF Vice Chair in China.  He has pioneered research in sensory experience design, with a focus on olfaction and spatial design, aimed at understanding visitor cognitive behavior in museums. Her work, merging new media with contemporary art, has led to groundbreaking projects and curated high-profile exhibitions, significantly enhancing the museum's prestige.

With a Master’s in Health Promotion and Education from NTNU and a nursing background, she passionately advocates for the wellness benefits of natural perfumery, emphasizing preventive healthcare.

12.00pm:  A Vibrant and Fragrant India.
Did you know that India has an astounding 47,000 varieties of Flora, cementing its status as one of the most biodiverse countries in the world? From saffron in the north to spices in the south, agarwood in the east, and sandalwood in the west, it's a treasure trove for perfumers. Jasmines, roses, frangipanis, and more grace its landscapes, enhancing its aromatic richness and legacy. 1500 years ago, Indian perfumer Gangadhara envisioned perfumery as a path to semi-divinity, freeing minds from worldly concerns. Indians have since evolved this notion, through simple self-care rituals for calm, peace, and joy in day-to-day life. Sri Kudaravalli conceived Xila to leverage this ancient wisdom, crafting perfumes that transport you to serene realms within.

​Sri Kudaravalli, in response to modern needs and driven by a vision to enhance the quality of day-to-day life, wove together two of the greatest gifts of Indian culture – its millennia-old perfumery history and its ancient spiritual traditions combined with her passion for neuroscience, olfactory science and background in chemical engineering, computer science and business. After learning Natural Perfumery at the Teacher's Academy, she received the New Luxury Award in 2022 and founded her perfume brand, Xila.  

Andrej Babicky - Italy

12.30pm: Capturing The Ephemeral.
This conference is for all those who are interested in discovering the magical world of raw materials and their extractions. Working with extracts obtained by ourselves from plants, seeds, barks allow us to know each raw material better and control the extraction process from start to finish, thus guaranteeing not only the best quality of the product but also its uniqueness. Learning to extract the delicate essence of flowers through the enfleurage technique, or of resins and roots through tinctures, enables us to enter a deep connection with nature, the raw material itself and to return to the very roots of perfumery. In this intricate journey, where patience and experimentation intertwine, enfleurage invites us to create olfactory symphonies that resonate with the very soul of nature.

​Andrej Babicky is a Certified Natural Perfumer and Raw Material Natural Extraction Methods Expert.  He won the New Luxury Awards in the student category in 2019.  Three years later, as a Master Perfumer, he became Teacher of many courses and masterclasses for the Natural Perfumery Teacher Academy and, member of the New Luxury Awards International Jury.  For him, extraction is more than just a technique; it is a passion and a dance with nature.

Pierre Dinand - Paris France

2.00pm: Meet Pierre Dinand, a Legend in the Perfume World.

Creezy Courtoy met Pierre during a perfume event she organised in Brussels in 1995. Dinand's captivating tales behind each bottle he crafted amazed her. She realized the urgency to share them with the world. Despite Dinand's legendary status, she noted a glaring oversight in the industry: the creators of these iconic bottles remain anonymous to the consumers and unrecognized in brand narratives. This interview not only celebrates Dinand's legacy but also marks a pivotal moment where the stories behind the creation of some of the world's most iconic perfume bottles are finally brought to light, challenging the industry to acknowledge the artists whose designs have become an integral part of the consumer experience.

Pierre Dinand, renowned for his exceptional perfume bottle designs, transitioned from an initial career as a test driver in the automobile industry, where he was dismissed for lacking a driver's license, to a pivotal role in a chemical company. His redesign of an unappealing package led to a promotion and a tripling of his salary. Dinand's career soared after designing bottles for Rochas, leading to collaborations with globally famous brands and over a hundred bottle creations.

​Creezy Courtoy, a French perfume historian and anthropologist, established The International Perfume Foundation in 1995, showcasing a remarkable collection of art that highlights the global heritage of perfume. Her work, including the UNESCO-endorsed exhibition and book "LES ROUTES DU PARFUM", has been seminal. Courtoy introduced the New Luxury Code in 2004 and founded the Natural Perfumery Teacher’s Academy in 2017, enhancing education in natural perfumery.

Kenza Benmenni - Algiers

2.30pm: Aromatic Heritage: Exploring Perfume Plants in the Jardin d'Essai du Hamma, Algiers.
This conference explores the botanical richness and cultural heritage of the Jardin d'Essai du Hamma in Algiers, focusing on its collection of perfume plants and their significance in traditional and modern perfumery. Established in 1832, this historical garden serves as a living museum and a center for botanical research, hosting a diverse array of flora, including a remarkable selection of aromatic plants used in the perfume industry. Through an ethnobotanical approach, we examine the cultivation, uses, and conservation status of these perfume plants, highlighting their role in Algerian heritage and their potential in contemporary natural perfumery. This research not only sheds light on the garden's botanical wealth but also underscores the importance of preserving traditional knowledge and biodiversity for future generations. The findings aim to inspire further botanical studies and investment opportunities in this country rich in perfume plants.

Her leadership at the garden reflects a deep commitment to preserving ecological diversity and promoting sustainable practices. Through her expertise, Kenza has significantly contributed to the conservation and enhancement of the garden's botanical wealth, positioning it as a key player in ecological research and education.

Hamdane Allalou - Algiers

Mr. Allalou, with a background in communication, is the Director of a Communication Consulting Agency and the Organizer of the Aromed PPAM Show. He serves as the President of the Algeria PPAM & Essential Oils Consortium, Vice President of the Interprofessional Council for the PPAM Sector in Algeria and IPF Algeria Chairman.  After founding his agency, he spearheaded efforts to revitalize the Perfume, Aromatic, and Medicinal Plants sector. His initiatives focus on biodiversity preservation, supporting rural women, and the acclimatization of perfume plants in challenging environments. His work has earned him numerous distinctions and recognition.

Sabrina Zidane - Algiers

Sabrina Zidane a London-educated business and marketing professional, returned to Algiers to revolutionize her father's distillery company. A Certified Aromatherapist and Natural Perfumer, Sabrina's expertise has not only elevated the family business but also made her a sought-after instructor at the Natural Perfumery Teacher's Academy. Growing up in the suburbs and always being close to nature, her love for plants and natural aromatherapy/perfumery has deeply influenced her career. Her work seamlessly blends traditional distillation techniques with innovative natural perfumery, marking her as a distinguished figure in the industry.

Kelly and Simon Lemesle - Madagascar

Traditionally used for its anti-inflammatory and calming effects, Butterfly Ginger oil stands out for its ability to enhance mood and promote relaxation. Its sweet, floral scent makes it a favorite in aromatherapy, helping to ease stress and anxiety. 3.00pm: The Rising Influence and Emerging Force of GCC Perfumery.
The GCC countries are emerging as significant players in the global perfumery industry, with major manufacturers establishing hubs in the region. Kuwait's leadership in perfumery innovation, particularly through large exhibitions, has inspired other GCC nations. Now, annual exhibitions across the GCC showcase the region's rich perfume culture, with perfumes tailored to consumer preferences that reflect unique tastes. This consumer-centric approach presents challenges but also drives innovation and creativity in the industry. As other GCC countries adopt Kuwait's innovative approaches, they are beginning to compete alongside Kuwait.

Omar Al Qattan, a Kuwaiti perfumer and entrepreneur, became the youngest and first Arab perfumer to win a New Luxury Award in 2019, defying all odds after losing half his sense of smell. With over a decade of study, implementation, and a unique blend of perfumery and marketing strategies, Omar continues to redefine the fragrance industry with his bespoke creations and brand consultancy services.

Heidi Karlsson - Texas

3.30pm: Beyond the Bottle: The Cultural Significance of  Fragrance from Ancient Egypt to AI-Driven Customization.

Heidi is an ancient perfume historian affiliated with The International Perfume Foundation, having participated in Creezy Courtoy's course on World Perfume History. Karlsson's career, initiated at UNESCO in Paris, France, integrates her varied experiences in sustainability, technology, and PhD research.

Jennifer Jones - Texas

4.00pm: A Journey Through Texas Flora and Equestrian Elegance.
During her captivating conference, Jennifer Jones will unveil the essence of native Texas plants and her innovative scent creations specifically designed for horse dressage. With a deep-rooted passion for the Texas Hill Country, Jennifer crafts olfactory masterpieces that narrate the region's rich tapestry, from the smoky whispers of Old Western saloons to the floral abundance of its meadows and the vivid palette of its sunsets. Her scents are a bridge between the past and present, celebrating Texas's heritage while appealing to contemporary sensibilities. Jennifer's presentation will not only showcase her journey of blending handcrafted natural botanical perfumes with essential oils and resins native to Texas but also delve into how these creations enhance the bond between rider and horse in the art of Classical Dressage. Attendees will be transported through scent, photography, and storytelling, revealing the profound connection between natural scents and equestrian elegance.

​Jennifer Jones, a Texan, founded The Scents of the Texas Hill. Along with her husband, they transformed a 2-acre estate into a sustainable Eden of native flora. She is a Certified Natural Perfumer, Aromatherapist, and lifelong equestrian skilled in Classical Dressage.  Her dual passions for horses and natural scents have merged, deeply influencing her work with the horses, including the fragrances in her experimentations.

Terry Johnson - Las Vegas

4.30pm: Updating Market Perspectives for Success.
Prior to covid, it would have been appropriate to address the current state of the natural perfumery markets around the world, and then discuss how we could build on our past successes going forward.
Now, however, in our post-pandemic world, it is much more important to consider how natural perfumery adapts to the transformational changes in consumer purchasing behaviors brought about by covid and how perfumers and others within the natural essence supply chain community can increase sales and profits by implementing necessary market shifts. Market shifts don’t involve replacing current market strategies. Instead, they represent necessary adjustments to our thought processes to improve marketing and sales effectiveness within the realities of current and future economic and social environments.

​Terry Johnson was selected Vice Chairman of the International Perfume Foundation (IPF) in 2014, after spending 30 years as a fresh flower supply chain marketing specialist, working with growers, wholesalers, and retail florists.  In 2019-2020 he organized and chaired a  committee of essential oil experts resulting in Sustainable Essential Oil Standards (SEOS) for growers and processors of essential oils. He is also an instructor in IPF’s Natural Perfumery Teacher’s Academy, teaching Business and Marketing in the Natural Essence Community.

​Rachel Binder, a sommelier and natural wine educator, applies her expertise in microbiology to create unique natural perfumes, shunning petrochemicals. Founding Pomare's Stolen Perfume in 2015, her work honors Queen Pomare IV's fight for Tahiti, reflecting on the theme of restitution. Her innovative approach has earned her the Art and Olfaction Aftel Award, the New Luxury Awards 2020 as Sustainable Brand of the Year, and 16 medals from the 2021 Artisan Perfume Awards.

Alejandro Soto Rodríguez - Chile

5.30pm: Essence of Heritage: Conserving Latin America's Olfactory Legacy Amidst Globalization and Environmental Change.
This project, a collaborative effort between CLEHAP and IPF, aims to safeguard the rich heritage of Latin American perfume, a legacy deeply rooted in the continent's diverse flora and intricate cultural practices. By focusing on the conservation of endemic plant species and the traditional knowledge of indigenous and local communities, this initiative seeks to protect and promote the unique olfactory heritage of this region and preserve its heritage in the face of rapid globalization and environmental challenges. This conference presentation will help you understand the Latin American contribution to natural perfumery, its state of the art, and its challenges. From Mexico to Argentinia and Chilean Patagonia, our collaborators will take you on a scented journey filled with nardos, cacao, vanilla, bálsamo, haba tonka, paramela, yerba mate, and cedrón.

BIO
Alejandro Soto Rodríguez is a Diplomat and Public Administrator, holding a degree from the University of Los Lagos, Chile, alongside various courses in management, foreign affairs, and cultural preservation. As a member of the Chilean Foreign Service, he currently serves as the Second Secretary at the Embassy of Chile in El Salvador. Rodríguez is also a founding member of Andes Aromas, the Chilean Perfume Foundation, and CLEHAP.

Diana Avellaneda - Buenos Aires

​Diana Avellaneda is Doctor in History and Theory of the Arts from the UBA (Universidad de Buenos Aires), with diplomas in Cultural Management, Heritage and Tourism from the Ortega y Gasset Foundation / Complutense University of Madrid, Spain, and Journalism from the Grafotécnico Institute of the Higher School of Journalism. Director of the Perfume Museum of Buenos Aires, Academic Director of the 1st and 2nd International Meeting of the History of Perfume (CAPIRE - UCM). Professor of History of Perfume and Arts at the Argentine Association of Chemists and Cosmetics (AAQC) and the Argentine School of Fragrances (EAF). Professor of Art History from Palermo. Manager of exhibitions and cultural events. 

Pamela Xochiquetzal Ruiz Gutiérrez - Mexico

BIO
​Pamela Xochiquetzal Ruiz Gutiérrez is an Art historian and researcher specialized in art, design and contemporary culture (UNAM / UAM-X). She has worked as a teacher at different universities, developed and coordinated curatorial projects, exhibition design, educational and networking activities in public and private institutions and within independent groups. Her line of research is image and culture studies, the relationship between urban art and advertising, the link between identity-design-counterculture, and design as a historical and cultural process. She was Research and Curatorial Coordinator of the Mexico Perfume Museum.
